TMJ Physiotherapy
Jaw Pain Shouldn't Run Your Day.
Hands-on TMJ physiotherapy in Penrith for jaw pain, clicking, locking and tension headaches, built around how your jaw moves.

Why Choose n1 physio?
Care Designed Around Your Jaw
Your jaw works constantly, every time you talk, chew, swallow or yawn. When the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) isn't moving well, you feel it in every one of those movements. Pain when you eat. A click every time you yawn. A jaw that won't open fully in the morning. Headaches that sit at your temples by mid-afternoon.
At n1 physio, we treat jaw pain the same way we treat everything: the individual, not just the injury. TMJ problems rarely come from the jaw alone. Clenching, neck posture, stress, old injuries and how you sleep all play a part. Our TMJ physio assessment looks at the whole picture, so your treatment targets the cause rather than chasing symptoms.
No referral is needed. At your first visit, we'll explain what's driving your symptoms and map out a clear plan, so you know what to expect from the start.
Ajay and Stephen perform TMJ assessments at n1 physio.

What To Expect
What to Expect From TMJ Physiotherapy at n1 physio
From your first session, we take the time to listen, assess thoroughly and explain clearly. No fluff, no sales pressure, and no endless sessions without direction. Just thoughtful, data-informed TMJ treatment built around your jaw, your habits and your goals.
Here's how your TMJ treatment works:
- Detailed assessment. We measure how far your jaw opens, how it tracks side to side, where it clicks or catches, and how your neck and posture are contributing.
- Hands-on treatment. Gentle joint mobilisation and soft tissue release for the jaw, face and neck muscles to ease pain and restore movement.
- Dry needling (where appropriate). To settle overactive muscles such as the masseter and temporalis.
- Targeted jaw exercises. Control, mobility and relaxation exercises, so you know exactly what to do at home.
- Habit and load changes. Practical strategies for clenching, chewing, screen posture, sleep position and stress.
- Working with your dentist. If a splint or dental review would help, we coordinate with your dentist so your care is joined up.
Our goal is simple: to help you eat, talk and sleep without thinking about your jaw.

TMJ Physiotherapy Penrith FAQs
Yes. Physiotherapy is one of the most common first-line treatments for TMJ disorders. A physio assesses how your jaw, neck and surrounding muscles are working, then uses hands-on treatment, targeted exercises and habit changes to reduce pain and restore normal jaw movement. Most TMJ problems are muscular or mechanical, which is exactly what physios treat.
No. You can book directly with n1 physio at our Penrith or South Penrith clinic without a referral. If your dentist or GP has already assessed your jaw, bring along any notes or scans and we'll factor them into your plan.
Often both, and they work best together. A dentist checks your teeth, bite and whether a splint would help. A physio treats the joint, muscles and movement patterns behind the pain. We regularly coordinate with local dentists. For more detail, read our guide on jaw pain: when to see a physio or a dentist.
In the short term: rest the jaw with softer foods, avoid gum and wide yawns, apply warmth to tight jaw muscles, and notice when you clench during the day. For lasting relief, a physio assessment identifies what's driving the pain so treatment targets the cause, not just the flare.
Avoid chewing gum, hard or chewy foods (crusty bread, tough meat, whole apples), biting your nails, resting your chin on your hand, and opening your mouth wide. Try not to push through clicking or locking. If the flare doesn't settle within a few days, book an assessment.
TMJ is the temporomandibular joint itself: the hinge where your jaw meets your skull, just in front of each ear. TMD (temporomandibular disorder) is the term for problems with that joint and the muscles around it. In everyday conversation, most people say "TMJ" to mean both.
It depends on how long you've had symptoms and what's causing them. After your initial assessment, your physio will give you an honest estimate and a clear plan. Your home exercise programme does a lot of the work between visits, so sessions are spaced out as you improve.
Yes. TMJ physiotherapy is billed as a standard physiotherapy consultation, so you can claim on the spot through HICAPS if your extras cover includes physio. Medicare rebates may be available with an eligible GP care plan and referral. We also accept DVA, WorkCover and CTP claims. Contact our team before booking to confirm eligibility, fees and any documents required.
